What are SVG files?

You can use SVG files, a vector image file, for various projects, including camping ones. This file type is perfect for making detailed images with intricate lines and is resizable without sacrificing the high resolution. This function makes them ideal for use in the vector programs that most digital cutting machines need.

Summertime Memories

Even though our temps are often in the tripple digits, I love spending time outdoors in the summer. So many great memories of BBQs and picnics with friends and family!

One of my favorite memories is from a swimming party we had a few years ago with visiting family. We all enjoyed grilled hot dogs and hamburgers (plant-based, of course!), played games, and watched a projected movie outside. It was such a fun night!

This year, I’m excited to add a touch of fun to my summer gatherings with this free “Let’s Chill & Grill” BBQ SVG file I designed in Adobe Illustrator. This file is perfect for creating invitations, decorations, and even t-shirts for your next party. So fire up the grill and get ready to have some fun!

Memories of summer around a pool

As a child, summer always meant swimming in the pool. Whether at a friend’s house or the community pool, I always loved spending time in the water. Even now, summer time always brings back memories of swimming in the pool with my friends and family.

The best part was always going on those giant inflatable rafts and floating around in the water. It was always so much fun! And, of course, no pool day was complete without some delicious summer snacks. Watermelon always tasted extra sweet when eaten by the pool.

Now that I’m an adult, summertime still brings back all those nostalgic memories of childhood pool days. But now, I can add a new summer memory: making creative family t-shirts with my Cricut machine! You can, of course, use a Silhouette cutting machine for this file as well. I’m just partial to my Cricut!

Summer Screen Time Checklist for Kids https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/summer-screen-time-checklist-for-kids/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/summer-screen-time-checklist-for-kids/#respond Thu, 08 Apr 2021 14:47:31 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=18474 Summer is just around the corner and soon your kids will be home. Help them manage screen time with this Summer Screen Time Checklist for Kids! Don’t forget to scroll to the end of this post for more great summer free printables.

I don’t know about you guys but our summer days are usually spent trying to convince my pre-teen boys to get off their screens. Whether it’s a computer, tablet, or phone, screen time is seriously regulated in our house.

I am, by no means, against all screen time but I do believe their little developing minds would do well to run outside a bit. Or read a book. Or clean the kitchen…a girl could hope!

Summer Screen Checklist

Last summer, I got tired of asking my kids to complete their responsibilities before asking for screen time so I made this easy checklist. Now they know exactly what needs to be done before even thinking of pulling out their tablets.

The checklist includes these responsibilities:

Have you:

  • made your bed, brushed your teeth, put away pajamas, and eaten breakfast?
  • had 20 minutes of reading a book of your choice and 20 minutes of writing or drawing?
  • completed one family responsibility?
  • played outside for at least 30 minutes?
  • been creative for at least 30 minutes? (Legos, art, music, science kits, etc.)
  • worked on your daily math problem?

I’ve included a second page to this file that is completely blank. You’ll be able to write in whatever responsibilities make sense for your own family!

Now, they know if they can have screen time because their checklist has been marked off!

One of the great side effects of using this chart was that often times, one of their responsibilities often led to them completely forgetting that they wanted to play on a screen.

What started off as wanting to check off the “play outside” box would end up becoming an all day adventure!

The Best STEM Subscription Boxes for Kids! https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/the-best-stem-subscription-boxes-for-kids/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/the-best-stem-subscription-boxes-for-kids/#comments Mon, 18 Nov 2019 14:30:00 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=12633
Child holding stack of STEM Subscription Boxes in front of mailbox.

This post on STEM Subscription Boxes for Kids contains affiliate links.  The small percentage I may earn off your purchase comes at no extra cost to you and helps T&T continue to offer free printables and tutorials!

My 7 year old son (soon to be 8!) is absolutely crazy about anything STEM related. I was able to keep up with his insatiable curiosity for a long time. Now he’s expressed interest in circuitry and coding and those just aren’t my area of expertise.

Thank goodness there are now amazing STEM-focused subscription boxes for kids that can fill in the gaps and continue feeding my child’s natural interests!

Child holding UV sensitive beads up to the sun.

A month ago, I reached out to six STEM subscription box services. You know that there’s no way I’d give you an opinion without having seen them first! Here are the boxes:

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

I’m happy to report that while the contents and focus of each is drastically different,  all six boxes were thoughtfully assembled, extremely well made, and totally able to hold my child’s attention. Since I was happy with the quality of the boxes, the only thing left to talk to you all about are the specifics like categories, price points, and targeted age brackets.

I hope having all of this information in one place helps you make the right STEM subscription box choice for you and your child!

Below you’ll find the name, suggested ages, and price of each box. Age requirements can fluctuate depending on child maturity and adult interaction. Prices will vary depending on length of subscription.

MEL Science & MEL Kids

5-10 years old & 9-14 years old, $24.90 & $34.90 (Use code JULY25 for 25% off first box!)

Description: MEL Science “is about exploration, experiments, discovery, and asking questions – all of which comes naturally to all children.” They provide a Chemistry monthly subscription box that contains 2-3 experiments appropriate for ages 9-14. They also have a younger box option that comes with a hands-on wood device model and colorful activity booklet.

Mom P.O.V: I’m waiting on my first box to arrive but based on the videos I’ve seen, MEL Science Chemistry subscription box is going to be tons of fun for the entire family! I’m really hopeful that it’ll be able to keep the attention of my older kids. I’ll update this post once I’ve played around with it.

UPDATE (1/9/2021): The MEL Science box is absolutely AMAZING. It definitely kept the attention of my 11 yr. old with minimal supervision from me.

The starter box comes with everything you need to complete the monthly chemistry kits. This includes beakers, stands, phone magnifier, and two sizes of safety goggles. I love that I didn’t have to provide anything other than water!

Inside contents of the MEL Science box, one of the best STEM subscription boxes for kids.

He was totally amazed by the chemical reactions and immediately asked when the next experiments were going to arrive! We’re planning on incorporating the boxes into our homeschool schedule.

Child working on the MEL Science Box

My 9 year old worked on the MEL Kids kit. I was really impressed with how fun the delivery of all the information was. My son enjoyed it but went through it really fast. They suggest the kit for 5-10 year old but I’d probably go with 5-7 year old instead.

If you’ve got a science-loving kid that has moved beyond the basic STEM subscription boxes and asking for “serious” science, MEL Science is the answer!

MEL Science gave me an awesome discount to share with you all! Use code “JULY25” for 25% off the first month! >>>CODE HERE<<<

Spangler Science Club

Kindergarten – 6th grade, starts at $14.99

Description: The Spangler Science Club is all about giving kids hands on science experiments and real world STEM activities. Each STEM subscription box contains at least 5 projects focused around a central theme (such as Solar Science). Also contains instructional booklets for both the child and adult guide.

Mom P.O.V: Steve Spangler is almost a legend when it comes to getting kids excited about STEM. It should come as no surprise that his subscription box service is completely on point.

The science experiments were thought-provoking and entertaining for both my kindergartner and my 2nd grader. The box did require a few additional supplies but they were pretty standard household items that weren’t difficult to find.

Creation Crate

Suggested Ages: 12+, $29.99/mo

Description: Creation Crate is focused on teaching children and adults alike how to build electronics without any prior experience. Each tech subscription box contains a combination of hardware and programming software. Since each month builds on the skills learned previously, your child will gradually become more and more proficient in the basics of electronics.

Mom P.O.V: My seven year old was practically foaming at the mouth when he saw the wires and circuit board in this box! He’s still a bit too young to complete the Mood Lamp entirely on his own. It’s a great project to work on with either his father or me. To tell you the truth, I’m kinda excited to begin learning about electronics too!

Inside contents of the Creation Crate subscription box service.

UPDATE 11/10/2019: My son is now 10 years old and still loves this box! He’s able to do the projects almost completely by himself. He’s now working on the Memory Game box and can’t wait to do more!

Green Kid Crafts

Suggested Ages: 2 – 10+, $19.95/mo

Description: Green Kid Crafts was created by a working mom and environmental scientist. It offers children 2 – 10+ a monthly STEM subscription box dedicated to science, tech, engineering, art, math activities. Each box comes with 4 -8 STEAM projects and a 12-page magazine all focused around one central theme.

Mom P.O.V:  I love that each of the projects are completely enclosed in their own packaging. I can grab one and throw it in my purse for on-the-go learning. Perfect for doctor’s offices or restaurants. LOVE that they have a sibling discount too!

Bitsbox

Suggested Ages: 6 – 12 years, $40/month

Description: Bitsbox is a monthly subscription box that shares easy coding projects that teach kids to program apps. Because the kids learn by copying small bits of code into an online editor, it’s essential that they have access to an internet ready computer with a physical keyboard. Once written, the apps can be shared and viewed on any mobile device.

Mom Point-Of-View: I was initially worried that this was going to be above my child’s head. We don’t allow much screen time but as soon as I explained how to use the “shift” key, he was ready to go! I’m really impressed with the quality of the book design and the fun little trading cards. If you feel like your child doesn’t need physical copies, there’s also a $20/mo. PDF-only option as well.

Child's hand adding stickers to the Bitsbox booklet.

Update: Bitsbox has improved their already great box by including a Trapper Keeper (for reals!) to store all the perfectly sized coding worksheets. My son had a difficult time laying out the previous workbook while trying to type so this improvement is awesome. Same great kid-friendly apps!

Bitsbox Update with Trapper Keeper.

Tinker Crate

Suggested Ages: 9-16+, $19.96/mo

Description: Tinker Crate provides hands on STEM projects straight to your door. Each box contains supplies to make a single project. Also includes additional materials to allow your child to “tinker” with the completed project. Since they are part of the Kiwi Crate umbrella, you also have the option of switching your subscription to one of the other box options.

Mom P.O.V: They recommend ages 9-16 but my 7 year old was totally able to complete the project without any assistance. This, of course, may vary with each box but it’s a good baseline to go off of. I’m totally digging the solid wood supplies and love the basic problem solving skills this box provided.

UPDATE 11/27/2018: KiwiCo has expanded to offer 7 different boxes for different interests and age groups. From 0 months (Panda Crate) to 104 years (Eureka Crate), there’s a subscription box for everyone!

Child reading manual for the Tinker Crate.

Groovy Lab In A Box

Suggested Ages:  8+, $29.99/mo

Description: Groovy Lab In A Box is your classic STEM subscription box for kids. It has enough supplies to complete approximately 5 projects for the month. The 20+ page lab notebook was easy enough for my 7 yr old son to read through by himself. It taught him the beginning basics of the engineering design process. Our box sample contain projects that were themed around water and ice.

Mom P.O.V: I absolutely love that every single supply needed to complete these projects was delivered in this box. That meant my son could open the box and start working immediately without any frantic runs to the drugstore. The five different experiments plus the design challenge at the end continued to engage my son throughout the entire month.

UPDATE 4/15/18: We’ll be signing up for this box during summer break. Perfect for “I’m bored!” moments!

Child reading manual from the Groovy Lab In A Box STEM subscription boxes.

Girls That Make

Suggested Ages: 10+, $39.99/mo

Descriptions: Each Girls That Make box features a wearable tech project that can be made with the step-by-step instruction booklet and included components. Projects include flashing bracelet, cloud pillow, and singing cat hat.

Mom P.O.V: Made by the same company as Creation Crate (see above). The Girls That Make box is equally challenging and educational. My 10 year old son was absolutely fascinated but did need some assistance. (Totally okay with that because I was learning too!)

I love that they’re focusing on getting girls interested in electronics. Please don’t let that deter you from getting a box for your boys though. My son turned the bracelet into a flashing door hanger after assembly!

Recycled Laundry Lint Fire Starters https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/recycled-laundry-lint-fire-starters/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/recycled-laundry-lint-fire-starters/#comments Mon, 15 May 2017 22:00:35 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=13478 I know, I know, you’re probably wondering why I’m posting pictures of toilet paper tubes filled with laundry lint. Has Vanessa finally completely lost her crafty mind? I promise you I haven’t! Whether you’re planning on doing some hardcore camping this summer or just want to start a small bonfire in your backyard, these Recycled Laundry Lint Fire Starters are sure to save the day…and the planet!

Making these really couldn’t be any easier. Probably the hardest part of this whole tutorial is remembering to save your toilet paper tubes and lint. I made a handy lint collector a couple months ago that has been perfect for collecting and storing lint until I need it. Grab the tutorial and free cutting file here! To assemble, just shove enough lint into each toilet paper tube until completely full. No need to compact the lint completely, you’ll be amazed just how quickly the lint and cardboard tube catch on fire. Common sense disclaimer: Please take all standard precautions when working with fire. Do not light until you’re absolutely prepared to extinguish a fire if necessary.

I like to make a dozen or so of these Recycled Laundry Lint Fire Starters and store them we need them the most. I’ve been known to occasionally crave homemade s’mores over a backyard fire so having these fire starters ready to go is must! Plus it feels great seeing items like lint and toilet paper tubes being put to good use instead of going directly into the trash. I get to enjoy delicious s’mores while saving the Earth? Win/win!

In addition to using making and using these homemade Recycled Laundry Lint Fire Starters, we try to make our laundry habits as environmentally friendly as possible. I absolutely love that Tide® PODS™ Plus Downy® can dissolve in any temperature of water so we can save energy and still get our whites sparkling bright! Plus with the addition of Downy Fabric Protect, it’s guaranteed that our clothes are cleaned, conditioned, and protected all in one step! If you utilize the HE Turbo technology of Tide, you’ll get 6x the cleaning power in half the time (although it also works with standard washing machines as well.) A cleaning powerhouse that allows me to use less energy? Totally awesome in my book! (As with all household and laundry cleaners, please remember to keep Tide® PODS™ Plus Downy® out of reach from children.)

Summer is quickly approaching and you definitely do not want to be stuck trying to light a difficult bonfire. Just whip up some of these Recycled Laundry Lint Fire Starters and you’ll be good to go. Happy summertime!

How To Make Grilled Pizza https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/how-to-make-grilled-pizza/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/how-to-make-grilled-pizza/#respond Tue, 24 May 2016 01:36:56 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=11948 Making pizza on a grill is crazy easy with these hints and tricks!I partnered with HomeRight to bring you this tutorial. This post contains affiliate links for your convenience and to assist in the maintenance of this site.

Like everyone else, I’m a huge sucker for pizza. Good pizza, bad pizza, thin pizza, thick pizza…I’m really not that picky! We enjoy making individual pizzas in the oven for Movie Night most Fridays but now that the warmer weather has rolled in (hello desert heat!), I have zero interest in cranking up the temperature in my kitchen by turning on the oven. Here’s where our table top grill comes in handy! Less mess, less heat, and you end up with delicious Grilled Pizza!

How To Make Grilled Pizza - Ready to eat!Tip 1. The Setup

We have some friends who have this awesome outdoor pizza oven that they fire up every so often and invite tons of people over to enjoy good times over good pizza. We, unfortunately, do not have a fire stone oven so we just make due with either our gas or charcoal grills. Lately, we’ve been loving a portable charcoal grill that is small enough to fit right on the serving table! It creates a great assembly line where people start by adding pizza sauce and toppings on their personal pizza and end right at the same table where it’s cooking.

How To Make Grilled Pizza - IngredientsTip 2. The Heat

It took us a while to figure out just how hot we had to let the charcoals get in order to cook the pizza in a reasonable time. Optimally, the pizza would cook in under 5 minutes but we found it more likely to take closer to 7 minutes. Still not too shabby! Another friend highly recommended using a pizza stone to evenly disperse the heat and cut back even more on the cooking time. She was totally right!

Another way we cut back on the prep time before the party was to use HomeRight’s new ElectroLight Fire Starter. With temperatures as high as high 1300°F, it got the charcoal going in about 3 minutes and all without any lighter fluid or other nasty chemicals. It was seriously pretty amazing to watch!

There are tons of dough recipes out there but my favorite comes recommended by Minimalist Baker and can be found on the Food Republic’s site under Best Basic Pizza Dough Recipe. It’s a super easy recipe that grills perfectly. The only hiccup is that they forgot to add that you’ll need 3 tbsp of sugar in the ingredients list. Oops!

The same friend that recommended the pizza stone also recommended baking the individual pizzas slightly before setting them out for your guests who will then place the pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings on the baked side. The unbaked side of the pizza will go on the heated pizza stone and you won’t have to worry about it not cooking all the way through! Do I have brilliant friends or what?!

How To Make Grilled Pizza - GrilledTip 4. The Toppings

I’m of the opinion that the more pizza topping options the better! You sit there long enough and most people are going to want to make a second pizza so make sure to have plenty of all topping in stock. My absolute favorite variety of pizza is feta cheese and fresh jalapenos but the sky’s the limit! You could even have some cooked apples, cinnamon, and butter on stand-by to make a yummy dessert pizza. Perfect end to a perfect night!

How To Make Grilled Pizza - Pile on!Tip 5. The Guests

All that’s left to do is invite some of your closest friends and family members for a super fun night of delicious grilled pizza making. With a little bit of prep, it really is so easy and nobody has to sweat in the kitchen. Hope you have a great time!

DIY Marbled Sunglasses https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/diy-marbled-sunglasses/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/diy-marbled-sunglasses/#respond Thu, 25 Jun 2015 12:21:43 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=9816 DIY marbled sunglasses 3

Hi everyone, Vanessa here and I’ve got a special surprise for you today! Alexis from Persia Lou is here to share a super fun tutorial for making Marbled Sunglasses. She is one of my absolute favorite bloggers and I am constantly blown away at her tutorials and creativity. Seriously, she’s amazing and I highly suggest you follow Persia Lou right this second!

Hey there! I’m Alexis, the crafter and blogger behind Persia Lou, and I am so excited to be guest posting on Tried & True today!

I have a simple and inexpensive crafty project for you all today. I have been wanting to try nail polish marbling for ages now, and when I was thinking about fun summery projects, I thought it would be a lot of fun to try it out on a pair of inexpensive sunglasses. And it was! I love the result, and am looking forward to more marbling projects in the future. Here’s what you need to make your own DIY marbled sunglasses:

DIY Marbled Sunglasses

Materials:

  • Sunglasses (I picked mine up at the Dollar Store!)
  • Nail Polish
  • Water
  • Container for water (I used a disposable lasagna pan)
  • Thin Dowel Rods or Bamboo Skewers
  • Masking Tape
  • Craft Knife

Step One. Prepare your sunglasses by covering the lenses with masking tape. Layer pieces of tape over the lenses and then trim off the excess around the lenses using the craft knife.

marbled sunglasses step 1

Step Two. Repeat the process so the back sides of the lenses are covered as well. Now your glasses are all ready to marble!

I found that the marbling technique has a little bit of a learning curve, so I would recommend practicing on something else (I did a few plastic cups) before doing your glasses. I tried dollar store nail polish first and didn’t have as much success as I did with the cheap drug store polish.

marbled sunglasses step 2

Step Three. Fill your container with water, and then drizzle nail polish on top of the water. If you want you can swirl the paint with your dowel, but you have to work quickly. Put the glasses face down into the paint, pushing the glasses under the water, and then lifting them out.

marbled sunglasses step 3Step Four. Let the paint dry completely before touching it. Use a dowel rod to swirl up the leftover paint from the water.

marbled sunglasses step 5

Step Five. Then you can drizzle more paint on top of the water and dip the sides of the glasses.

marbled sunglasses step 4

Step Six. When the paint is completely dry, remove the tape from the lenses.

marbled sunglasses step 6

And, that’s it! Some new fun marbled glasses ready to help you enjoy the sunny days ahead!
