History of St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17th, but where does this tradition originate? Well, it all started with St. Patrick himself! He was born Maewyn Succat in Roman Britain around 385 A.D. When he was 16 years old, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. For two years, he worked as a shepherd. Then, he escaped back to Britain and studied Christianity under the direction of St. Germain at Auxerre in France for several years. He became ordained as a priest around 415 A.

A few years after he returned to France, Patrick became an abbot at the monastery in Lérins. After many years of missionary activity around Gaul, Patrick was summoned by the Pope to appear in Rome. The traditional date for this summons is 460 A.D., but some modern scholars argue that it could have been closer to 499 or The authorities imprisoned him in Rome for a while. Still, it is believed that he made a miraculous escape and fled north to Burgundy. From there, many stories circulated of his travels back to Ireland, where he baptized and converted many.

Now that you’re educated on St. Patrick’s storied life let’s get into that green spirit with some excellent St. Patrick’s Day free svg files!

Why I love my Cricut!

You can find all the links to these files below, but I’ll give you my reasons for loving Cricut so much. My Cricut is seriously my favorite craft toy! It’s so stinking fun and makes crafting way more enjoyable. You can create so many different types of projects with it, but it’s mainly used to cut out paper and vinyl, make shapes and stencils, and all kinds of stuff like that.

Two Cricut machines side by side on a craft table.

With my Cricut, I can create custom vinyl stickers for my laptop or car decor. I also use it to make designs on t-shirts (I finally know how to make those cool stitched-looking designs on the front of shirts!). I can make stencils for painting projects and designs on wood signs. And probably my favorite part, I use it to cut out paper and vinyl shapes like cute shamrocks.

Cricut is the easiest way to create custom crafts! So if you don’t have a Cricut machine yet, why are you waiting??

Which is kinda a bummer since my husband’s ancestors come from Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day is always a great opportunity to talk about heritage and immigration with our children. That’s why I made these super quick and easy St. Patrick’s Day Candy Gift Cards that I’ll be including in my kids’ lunch boxes on the big day. My kids love that we’re celebrating a holiday that’s near and dear to them and I love that it only took a couple minutes to make. Talk about a win/win for everyone!

Download the “St. Patrick’s Day Candy Gift Card” here!

This project is so crazy easy that you don’t really need any help assembling it. To begin, just print out the free St. Patrick’s Day Candy Gift Card and trim around the edges. There are four card to a sheet. Use a metal ruler and a carefully-handled craft knife to add an incision along the top section of the kettle. Make sure to go all the way to the edges so that the chocolate coin fits!

Use a glue stick (totally love my Jumbo ZIG Glue Pen!) to attach the printed card to a 4.25″ x 5.5″ piece of green cardstock. Make sure you don’t get any glue near the kettle opening or else you won’t be able to insert the gold!

Once the glue had dried completely, just insert a chocolate gold coin (I found some at the dollar store but here’s some on Amazon too!) into the “kettle” and slip inside of your kid’s lunch for a super fun surprise! Of course, since these are so easy (and inexpensive) to make you could assembly line a ton of them for co-workers, students, or even neighbors. Who wouldn’t love to receive a sweet little gift from their favorite leprechaun!

By the time it’s March, all our thoughts are focused on either Easter or surviving Spring Break. There’s not much energy left for celebrating all things green, right?

Well, no worries! I’m here to give you a super easy project that can be finished and hanging on your front door in under five minutes. I know that’s a crazy claim but seriously, if you can wrap a piece of fabric around something and tie a knot, you can make this!

Neon Lucky T-Shirt https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/neon-lucky-t-shirt/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/neon-lucky-t-shirt/#comments Tue, 18 Feb 2014 13:35:44 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=6045 This Neon Lucky T-shirt tutorial was created as a sponsored post for i Love To Create and Blueprint Social.

With the weather being what it is lately, I’m pretty sure everyone is counting down the days to Spring. I know I am! Mother nature may still have a few more cold tricks up her sleeve but you can always brighten your day with some fun neon colors added to your wardrobe. Making this Neon Lucky T-shirt has never been easier than with Tulip Fabric Markers from i Love To Create. Perfect for Spring, St. Patrick’s Day, or any other time you need a little pick-me-up!

Neon Lucky T-Shirt - A Tried & True ProjectThese fabric markers are super easy to work with (even my 5 year old can use them!) but there is a trick…stabilize, stabilize, stabilize! It’s super easy to do, just print your template on heavy cardstock and stick it to the inside of your t-shirt with spray adhesive. Basically, you want to make sure that something is holding your fabric in place while you have fun decorating it with the fabric markers!

Neon Lucky T-Shirt - Position templateNow that your template is stuck to the inside of the shirt, all you have to do is trace the lines through the t-shirt and color it in. (Feel free to download and use my “Neon Lucky T-Shirt Template!“) Make sure your t-shirt is a light enough color so that you can see the design through it. I had some difficulties seeing through the grey parts of mine but it was easy to just connect the lines. Solid white or any other light color would definitely work better!

Neon Lucky T-Shirt - TracingDepending on taste, continue coloring in your design until you reach the desired color saturation. I colored mine in three times, allowing about 10 minutes of drying time in between each coat. I absolutely love the neon green! Don’t forget to follow the instructions and allow to dry for 24 hours before washing.

Neon Lucky T-Shirt - Tulip Fabric MarkersAnd here’s me modeling my new Neon Lucky T-Shirt in my messy craft room! I absolutely love the light and transparent feel of the design and the fact that it was so easy to make? Love it. I’m really excited about trying out the Tulip Dimensional Mini 3 Packs and Tulip One-Step Mini Tie-Dye Kits as well. C’mon Spring, I’m officially ready for you!

Neon Lucky T-Shirt - Love this t-shirt!If you’re interested in making a Neon Lucky T-Shirt of your own, you can pick up these exclusive products at your local Michaels Arts & Crafts store.   For those folks without a Michaels store in their area, you can order the products at iLoveToCreate.com.  iLoveToCreate.com is currently offering free shipping on any neon Tulip product for the month of February when you use coupon code NeonFEB (ends February 28th). Don’t forget to keep up to date on with i Love To Create via Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and their blog!
