How to use SVG files

If you’ve ever used a cutting machine, chances are you’ve used an SVG file. But why are SVG files so crucial for these machines? Here’s a look at why cutting machines use SVG files and how they help make your projects easier.

SVG files are vector-based, which means you can scale them to any size without losing quality. SVG files are perfect for cutting machines because they allow you to resize your designs without worrying about the file getting blurry or pixel-heavy.

SVG files are also easy to edit, so if you need to make changes to your design, it’s quick and easy. Plus, if you’re using a cutting machine that supports layers, you can easily edit individual parts of your design without affecting the rest of the design.

I’ve got tons of free SVG files you can access in the Tried & True Creative Library! Continue reading to learn how to sign up.

If you’re looking for a modern and stylish Halloween wreath that won’t break the bank, look no further than your local Dollar Tree. You can create a stunning Halloween wreath with inexpensive supplies to impress your guests, ghouls, and goblins!

Why you should make your Halloween wreath

It’s no secret that Halloween is one of the most fun holidays of the year. But what’s not so fun is spending a lot of money on decorations. One way to save money and still have a great-looking decoration is to make wreaths. And it’s not that difficult if you use inexpensive materials from the dollar store.

With just a few expensive supplies, you can create a modern and stylish Halloween wreath that will impress your guests and cost you less than $10. So why not give it a try? You’ll be surprised at how much fun you have in the process.

Other reasons to make your own Modern Halloween wreath:

  • Making your wreath gets you in that Halloween spirit!
  • You can customize your wreath to match your Halloween decor, and it’s a great way to add a personal touch to your holiday decorations and front door decor.
  • Making your wreath is also fun for the whole family. So get creative and have fun!

Supplies needed from the dollar store

There are so many Halloween supplies you can get from a dollar store! For this modern wreath project, you’ll need:

A step-by-step guide to making the wreath

  1. Use hot glue to apply the bones to the wreath form. I found it helpful to start with the larger bones and then added the smaller bones after.
  2. Once the bones are in place, spray paint the wreath with your desired color. I used Krylon Citrus Green for mine.
  3. Make a simple bow from your decorative ribbon cut with scissors. I got this fabulous black and white ribbon from Michaels.
  4. Attach to bottom of wreath with either a wire or hot glue gun.

Customize your wreath with unique embellishments

There are many ways to customize this wreath to make it your own. Here are a few more ideas for you:

  • Use small pumpkins instead of bones, or use both!
  • Paint the wreath black and add glow-in-the-dark embellishments.
  • Tie some fake spider webs on here to make it even creepier.
  • Try a gradient look with spray paint for a fun and festive look.
  • Omit the ribbon completely. Or use a white ribbon or black ribbons customized with ghosts or skulls for a fun look.

Use your creativity to create the perfect Halloween door decorations!

In conclusion, making a modern Halloween wreath from Dollar Tree is a great way to save money and still have beautiful decorations for your home. You can create a stunning spooky wreath to impress your front porch guests with just a few supplies. So, get creative and have fun!

Make a Cheap and Easy Metallic Skulls Dollar Store Halloween Wreath https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/make-a-cheap-and-easy-metallic-skulls-dollar-store-halloween-wreath/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/make-a-cheap-and-easy-metallic-skulls-dollar-store-halloween-wreath/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 14:35:01 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=14363

There are few crafts I enjoy making more than Halloween wreaths. I’ve made so many wreaths over the years, and I love each of them! That being said, This Metallic Skulls Halloween Wreath might just be one of my absolute favorites. It’s minimal and modern from a distance, with just the right amount of spookiness when you get close. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that you can get almost all the supplies from a dollar store!

Dollar Store Halloween Supplies

You can pick up many great Halloween supplies at most dollar stores! I’ve made more than a dozen different types of dollar store DIY Halloween wreaths from craft supplies I’ve picked up there. Some of my favorites are:

As you can see, the options are almost endless! Most of my Halloween holiday decorations are from Dollar Tree but I’ll hop into the other dollar stores just out of curiosity sometimes. Halloween crafts are just so much fun to make!

Metallic Skulls Halloween Wreath

Supplies:

Step 1. First things first, you’re going to assemble all your supplies on a table in front of you…and then you’re going to grab a beverage of choice and turn on a good movie because gluing the skulls in place is going to take a while. But I promise it’s worth it! Begin by placing hot glue on the back of a skull and then placing it on the wreath, making sure to hold it in place long enough for the glue to harden. Don’t worry if it feels like the skulls aren’t really secure on the wreath. By the time you finish, there’s going to be so much glue on the wreath those skulls aren’t going anywhere!

Step 2. Now, glue a second skull on all four corners, positioning them closer to the first set of skulls.

Step 3. Continue adding the skulls until the entire front of the wreath is covered.

Step 4. Fill in the outer and inner edges with skulls until most of the wreath is covered.

Step 5. Now that all your skulls are in place, you must decide whether to keep your wreath au natural or go full glam with metallic paint. I chose spray paint!

Step 6. Apply your desired spray paint color over the entire wreath using light coats, allowing for full drying time.

My favorite thing about this Metallic Skulls Halloween Wreath is that from a distance, it looks like just an ordinary black wreath, but when you get closer, there are skulls, skulls, and more skulls!

What to buy for Halloween from Dollar Tree

A frugal way to do Halloween decorations is by going to the dollar store for supplies. For example, you can buy fake spiders, cobwebs, and other spooky decorations inexpensively. Dollar store supplies can be a great way to add some holiday spirit without spending much money. Here are other supplies I like to get at Dollar Tree for Halloween:

  • foam skulls
  • plastic skull
  • mini skeletons
  • supplies for skull wreath
  • kids treats
  • candle holders
  • mason jars
  • baskets
  • front porch decor
  • front door decor
  • balloons
  • mantle items
  • party favors
  • plastic spider
  • foam pumpkins
  • plastic pumpkins
  • glitter
  • fake broom
  • candy

The list could seriously go on and on! Most of the materials for this Easy Dollar Tree Wall Decor are from a dollar store (Dollar Tree), and even though I created them years ago, they still sell many of the same items during Halloween.

“The Witch Is In” Halloween Decor

Materials:

  • Wooden Painting Panel
  • Dollar Tree “Witch Is In” Sign
  • Dollar Tree Plastic Cauldron
  • Dollar Tree Plastic Eyeballs
  • Great Stuff Crack Filler
  • Paint
  • Hot Glue Gun / Glue Sticks
Supplies needed to make the easy "Witch Is In" Dollar Tree Wall Decor

Step 1. Use a pair of scissors (not your fabric ones!) to cut off the back portion behind the handle of the plastic cauldron. Be careful and go slowly, as there may be cracks along the way. Don’t worry, though—the crack filler will cover them up!

Cut cauldron in half

Step 2. Prepare the painting panel with your chosen paint colors. I went for orange and purple to keep the item lighthearted and whimsical, but it’s entirely up to you!

painting the backdrop

Step 3. Adhere the halved cauldron in place using hot glue. Since this is only temporary until the crack filler dries, don’t worry about putting too much glue.

Gluing the cut cauldron to the painted wood panel.

Step 4. First, follow the directions on the can of Great Stuff. It’s an easy task, but don’t fill the cauldron too high, or you’ll end up with a mess (like in the pictures below!). Instead, only fill it to the top of the rim and then press down on the eyeballs. The foam will expand over time so give it about 24 hours before checking back again.

Witch-Is-In-Halloween-Decor-16
Filling the cauldron with the crack filler

Step 5. Separate the shoes from the sign and glue expanding foam onto the handle. Again, don’t worry if it’s not stable because the foam will expand and secure the feet. Take the “Witch Is In” sign and glue it to the bottom of the plaque.

Adding the feet

That’s all there is to it! Attach a hanger to the back of your piece once the foam has dried. No one will realize that you only used a few dollar store items to create this amusing “Witch Is in” Halloween décor!

Dollar Tree is the perfect place to find affordable Halloween decorations. This tutorial will show you how to make a fun “The Witch Is In” sign using materials from Dollar Tree. Check out this project if you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive way to add some holiday spirit!

The Halloween wreath craft is a tradition that has been around for centuries. It’s not just a symbol of Halloween but a way to ward off spirits and other evils from the house. In recent years, Halloween decorating has shifted from being dark and scary to colorful and modern. If you’re looking for an easy Halloween decoration this year, then read on!

One of my favorite times of year is when stores start putting away their Summer supplies and stock their shelves with Halloween decor instead. Don’t get me wrong, I love the carefree feel of Summer, but nothing makes my heart flutter more than bags of skulls and bones. Since Halloween is all about just having fun, some of my favorite places to pick up supplies are the dollar sections of big stores. Why spend a ton of money on DIY Halloween decorations when you don’t have to?

A colorful Halloween

Every year I’m kind of torn between decorating with super traditional vintage Halloween decor or the uber-modern colorful trend that’s popular right now. Vintage usually wins out since that’s what I have more of, but I decided to try something different this year.

Since I have a 4-year-old daughter, I wanted to make sure that our Halloween decor was age-appropriate. I also wanted something less traditional and a little more modern. I found just the thing in the dollar section of Target!

I love how it turned out, and so did she!

Before we get too far, I want to do a quick shout-out to Kailo Chic. Kara’s projects are all fantastic, but her Halloween products are my favorite. She was the first person I saw using this bright color palette for Halloween, so I thought I should credit her. Seriously love everything she makes!

Supplies needed for Modern Halloween Wreath craft

How to make a modern dollar store Halloween wreath

This Modern Halloween DIY Wreath is so easy to make, you almost don’t need a tutorial! But if you’re looking for one, I’ll break it down in detail below. Make sure to check out the Tips & Tricks section below for hints on making this wreath!

You only need three supplies to make the wreath:

Step 1. Use an awl or any other sharp tool to pierce holes in the sides of the skulls. Try to keep them as symmetrical as possible. (See tips section if you don’t have an awl.)

Hand punching a hole into the side of a small orange skull with an awl.

Step 2. Use wire cutters to cut a large section of wire (approx. 48″ long). I like to cut mine larger than I need to make sure I have enough. Straighten the end of the wire and begin stringing the skulls.

Hand stringing an orange skull onto a wire.

Step 3. Continue adding the skulls to the wire until you’re happy with the length. Use pliers to twist the wires shut.

Step 4. Add a line of hot glue to the back of the skulls to prevent them from rotating on the wire.

Step 5. Finish the wreath by adding a big decorative bow. I got this wired ribbon from Michaels. I love their seasonal ribbons!

That’s it! Super easy, right?

Tips and Tricks for Dollar Store Halloween Wreath:

Here are a few tips and tricks I’ve learned from all the years of making Halloween wreaths:

  • Make sure the wire is thick enough that it can hold its shape. Last thing you want is a saggy wreath!
  • If you can’t find the exact same colorful skulls I used, you could always spray paint the standard white ones.
  • Don’t have an awl? A large nail would also work. Just make sure to be careful when puncturing!
  • Make sure the skulls aren’t pushed too tightly together. It’ll be harder to get them to lay flat if you squeeze them together.
  • You can expand or shrink the size of this wreath by adjusting the number of skulls and length of wire. Perfect for any door size!
  • This is a great project for older kids! Stringing the skulls on the wire really works on their hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills. If you have younger children, hold off on adding hot glue to avoid any burns or splatters. I was very careful with her around the heat from the glue gun and she never got burned once.

Customize Your Wreath

Of course, you can take the basic premise of this tutorial and customize it to make it 100% your own! Use natural colored skulls if you’re looking for more of a classic Halloween look, or spray paint everything black for a full-on goth feel.

Colors aren’t the only way to change up this wreath. Adding moss or colored tulle in between each of the skulls will create a totally different look!

Don’t forget to share with me on social media how you made this wreath all your own. I absolutely love to see your unique takes on all of my projects!

The Halloween wreath craft is a great way to show off your creativity. With just a few supplies, you can make the Halloween decoration of your dreams. The Halloween trends are changing from traditional colors and patterns to brighter ones that pop! Halloween is all about having fun, so feel free to take this opportunity to be festive with bright yellows, greens, purples, or any other color combination you want.

Pin this craft to your Halloween ideas board so you can come back and make it again next year!

Woman wearing Halloween Cheesecloth Ghost DIY Earrings

We’re big fans of Halloween, so I usually enjoy making themed family costumes for my kids, husband, and myself. I usually go all out with costumes and accessories, but since life is a bit hectic with homeschooling and such, I’ll be lucky if the kids’ store-bought costumes are ordered on time. I definitely need my crafts Halloween easy this year!

Since full-on costumes aren’t in the stars for me this year, I thought it would be fun to make some crazy DIY Halloween jewelry that I can throw on with a black t-shirt and some jeans. These super glam DIY Halloween earrings are the perfect solution!

What you’ll need Halloween Cheesecloth Ghost DIY Earrings

Supplies needed to make your own DIY Halloween earrings:

Supplies needed to make Halloween Cheesecloth Ghost DIY Earrings

All of these supplies are easily found at Michaels or Amazon. Remember that you can totally trade out some of these supplies for things you might have on hand. I’m sure tulle would work great as a substitute for the cheesecloth, or you can even use tulle and cheesecloth to make different color ghosts.

Here’s a great tutorial on how to substitute Elmer’s Glue for fabric stiffener. Don’t have foam balls? No worries, a small ball of aluminum foil will work great too! I used a foam block that I just had on hand to hold the “ghosts” as they were drying but a bowl of rice or beans would be a good substitute.

How to make the cheesecloth ghost earrings

Step One. If you’ve ever made the larger version of these cheesecloth ghosts, creating these earrings will be a breeze! To begin, place two foam balls on the sharp end of the skewer and insert them into the foam block. Set aside.

Hand pushing wood skewer into styrofoam ball.

Step Two. Cut four 5″ squares from the cheesecloth. If they’re not perfectly straight or symmetrical, don’t worry! Ghosts never are, anyways!

Step Three. In a container, add the fabric stiffener. You’ll only need a few spoonfuls because you’ll be squeezing the majority of it out of the cloth.

Step Four. Working one square at a time, dip the cheesecloth into the stiffener and squeeze any excess liquid back into the container. Open the cloth carefully and place it on a foam ball. Note: if you don’t wear gloves, your hands will get dirty!

Hands holding cheesecloth with fabric stiffener on it.

Step Five. Repeat with the other square of cheesecloth.

Wood skewers in green foam with small cheesecloth ghosts on it.

Step Six. Remove the ghosts from the skewers when they are completely dry, carefully pushing out the foam balls. Don’t be concerned if they become bent out of shape somewhat; they can be bent back. You can modify the ghosts’ length by cutting away some of the bottom of them with a pair of scissors. Try to maintain a few uneven strands to create that classic ghost form.

Hands holding a dried cheesecloth ghost.

Step Seven. Use a pair of pliers to open the fish hook earrings. Interweave the hook into the top of the cheesecloth and close the hook with pliers to finish.

Hands adding a fishhook earring to the top of a small cheesecloth ghost.

Step Eight. You can either keep the cheesecloth ghost earrings basic or paint them with some dimension paint to make them appear more lifelike. Allow drying before wearing.

Hands adding black eyes with paint to cheesecloth ghosts.

Who knew making DIY Halloween jewelry could be so easy and fun?! I adore how these huge cheesecloth ghost earrings look dangling from my ears. They’re the ideal statement piece if you don’t have a lot of time to put into a costume.

Halloween is a time for celebration and family fun. Kids of all ages can enjoy Halloween activities, but adults shouldn’t feel left out! It’s easy to get in the Halloween spirit with some DIY craft projects that are sure to impress your friends and loved ones this Halloween season.

In this Cute & Easy Halloween Cheesecloth Ghost DIY Earrings blog post, we’ve provided step-by-step instructions on how you too can create these adorable earrings from cheesecloth spritzed with fabric stiffener.

But before you go straight for the candy, why not try our free Halloween printable dice game. This game is perfect for kids and adults alike and can be played at home or in a classroom.

This game is fun and can help people get in the spirit of Halloween. Playing this Halloween game can give you a chance to just have some family time without having to focus on the sugar. If you’re hosting children at your house, playing this game could be a good way to entertain them while reminding them that it’s not just about candy.

This article will provide information about how to play this fun dice game as well as some suggestions on how to make it more difficult. We hope you enjoy playing our Halloween printable game!

Don’t forget to check out the list of kid-themed free printables at the end of this post!

Why play a Halloween printable game?

This free printable Halloween game is really super easy to make and play! It can be played with preschool through early elementary. It might seem super easy for adults and older kids but the young ones will love it!

Playing games is also good for brain development. Games require us to be creative when working to solve problems, see patterns or figure out puzzles. This can help young children when it comes to developing their problem-solving skills in later life.

This game can help teach kids about early mathematical concepts. Considering the number they need to complete a web and taking turns with other players is definitely a step towards learning about number sense.

Playing games together is a great way to bond with your child and provide them with an opportunity for peer interaction with other kids in the class or at home. Games, like this Halloween Dice Game, that are easy to understand will make this possible even for younger children.

The best reason to play this Halloween printable game? Your kids or students will have FUN!

How to download Halloween Dice Game

If you’re already a member of the Tried & True Creative Library, just log in to download! If you’re not, then it’s really easy to join. Just register with an email address in the box below. Membership is free and you can print as many times as you want.

Instructions

Step One. To accommodate as many children as possible, you’ll need to print off enough free printable Halloween Dice Game sheets for each of them. I really like the quality of this cardstock! Each of them doesn’t have to roll the die (unless there are more than six kids) but they will all require a spider-web scorecard.

Step Two. Make the Halloween character die from cardstock by cutting, taping, and folding (helpful if you score the edges with a pen!) Depending on your child’s age, this part may or may not need assistance. Give one scorekeeper spider web card to each child.

Step Three. To play, have each child pick a Halloween character as their own and then mark a line on the spider web every time that character is rolled. To be the winner, you must first complete the entire web. If there are six or fewer children playing, you may roll one die for the entire group. If you have more, let each kid make and roll their own die. The first one to roll enough of their character to fill the entire web wins.

That’s all there is to it! We had a lot of fun picking our characters and played many rounds of this game in one sitting with my kids! Instead of printing out the scorecard, again and again, I had them make new lines slightly higher than the original ones. They ended up with a really intricate spider web!

Fun Halloween facts

– There are more than 31 million homes with pumpkins on their porch or front hall

– The world’s most expensive pumpkin pie was auctioned for $22,000.

– More than 20 million fires are caused by fires starting from the use of candles during Halloween

– One dollar spent on Halloween candy will yield $4 in personal income to the economy

– More Halloween candy is consumed in a three day period than during any other time of the year

History of Vintage Halloween Designs

Traditions are an essential part of celebrating Halloween. Vintage Halloween designs are no exception. Like the vintage pumpkin banner below, many vintage designs come with a rich history and tell us about our traditions.

For example, vintage Halloween designs were initially made using real pumpkins and used to scare away evil spirits. They later evolved into carved-out pumpkins, which we use today for decorating our homes and carving jack-o’-lanterns.

This vintage design is also very popular with vintage Halloween enthusiasts looking for vintage pumpkins in thrift stores or yard sales. These vintage pumpkin designs are part of the history of Halloween. They have since become a staple during this time of year, with vintage shops selling special decor items to celebrate vintage Halloween style!

Super Glamorous Halloween Party with Cricut Foil Kit https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/super-glamorous-halloween-party-with-cricut-foil-kit/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/super-glamorous-halloween-party-with-cricut-foil-kit/#respond Tue, 29 Sep 2020 00:08:35 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=17760

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Cricut. All opinions are 100% mine.

Add a bit of glam to your life with this Halloween Party with Cricut Foil Kit! I’ve got instructions on how to make an invite, menu frame, and favor but the sky’s the limit with what you can do!

When Cricut shared with me that they were releasing an easy way to add foil to their projects, I immediately thought of Halloween. Foil and Halloween were just meant to be together!

In the paragraphs below, I’ll show you how I added foil to a different variety of papers to make a menu holder (can also be a picture frame!), a fold-out invitation, and a table placeholder/favor. You’ll be amazed just how easy it is to make such glam pieces!

You can just scroll down to read the entire project or use the table of contents below to just go directly to the info you need:

Cricut Foil Transfer Kit

The Cricut Foil Transfer Kit is super easy to use! I’ve got a full tutorial in my Beginner’s Guide to Cricut Foil Transfer Kit but I’ll go over the basics here too.

When you buy the Cricut Foil Transfer Kit, you’ll get all three line weight tips (fine, medium, and bold), 12 4″ x 6″ gold/metallic transfer sheets, and adhesive strips. You can purchase additional colors and sizes of foil transfer sheets.

Design Space makes it super easy to add foil to your project. Just select “Foil” from the Linetype pull down menu. You’ll have the option to select the line weight in a secondary menu that will pop up.

Now, just send your project to your Cricut Maker or Cricut Explore Machine (either works with the Cricut Foil Transfer Kit!) and follow the prompts to know when to switch out the different tips.

Confused? No worries! Read my Beginner’s Guide to Cricut Foil Transfer Kit for more detailed steps and pictures.

Halloween Party Invitation

The foil outline totally makes this fun Halloween Party Invitation! It looks super complicated but the machine, seriously, does all the work. I used Cricut Black Cardstock and a 12″ x 12″ sheet of gold foil (trimmed to fit project.)

You can find the Design Space file I used to make it here!

Gold Foil Menu Holder

I absolutely love this menu holder because it’ll bring such a fun, glamorous element to any Halloween table but also because it can be used as a picture frame when the festivities are done!

I used Cricut’s Black Kraftboard and a full 12″ Gold Foil Transfer Sheet to make two ornate frames.

You can find the Design Space file I used to make it here!

Foil Tombstone Placeholder/Favor

I absolutely love projects that are multi-use and these foil tombstone boxes are one of my favorites! They’re perfect for making sure everyone has a seat at the table as well as a little parting gift filled with treats.

I cut out two boxes per 12″ sheet of purple cardstock with a 12″ Gold Foil Transfer Sheet. Can be filled with small toys or candy!

You can find the Design Space file I used to make it here!

Ready to Party!

I hope you enjoyed seeing these three ways to have a super glamorous Halloween party with the Cricut Foil Kit! There are so many ways to customize each and every one of these projects. Can’t wait to see what you make!

Cute You’ve Been Boo-zed Halloween Gift https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/cute-youve-been-boo-zed-halloween-gift/ https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/cute-youve-been-boo-zed-halloween-gift/#respond Sat, 26 Sep 2020 16:06:00 +0000 https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/?p=17817 Halloween is for adults too so I’ve made this cute You’ve Been Boo-zed Halloween Gift! Perfect for family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers that need a bit of spirit in their lives.

Hand Holding a wine bottle on a back background

With the pandemic still running it’s course, we’re definitely doing things differently this year. Instead of enjoying a Halloween party with friends, we’ll probably just deliver these cute “You’ve Been Boo-zed” Halloween Gifts to the front door instead.

Definitely not as much fun as hanging out with friends but something is better than nothing this year!

Download Free Label

Since I know we’re all super busy trying to balance work, kids, and surviving, I made it super easy to print out these tags. Just head over to OnlineLabels.com in the link below and download the free file.

The great thing about grabbing this file from OnlineLabels.com is that you’ll be able to customize the file. You can change the wording completely, including the signature at the bottom.

While you’re there, I highly suggest ordering some of their Cardstock Door Tags to print these labels on. They come two to a page so they’re perfect if you want to give multiple gifts to neighbors or friends.

Plus, they come with perforated cuts for the door handle which makes your job so much easier and enjoyable!

The Perfect Gift

Now that you’ve got the labels printed and cut, all you have to do is find a bottle of wine or liquor your neighbor enjoys and your gift is ready! I chose a few bottles of wine to pass out but you could easily choose liquor or even a non-alcoholic sparkling beverage.

During these stressful times, sometime you just need a quick and easy gift to remind people how much they mean to you. I hope this Cute You’ve Been Boozed Halloween Gift is useful. No need to bring out scissors, tape, or glue…just print and gift!
